Tech Article

Kinglsey, Karla. (September 2007). Empower Diverse Learners with Educational Technology and Digital Media. Intervention in School and Clinic, Vol 43, p52-56

Technology has made a mark in society and is here to stay. This includes the education world. As teachers, it is our responsibility to ensure that our students are allowed the proper technology training in the classroom. This is asking a lot from the teacher too. Technology changes rapidly and it is responsibility of the teacher to continue to stay up on the latest applications and use it in the curriculum. When technology is integrated into the curriculum it “can simultaneously provide contexts for affirming diversity, facilitating problem solving and creativity, and enhancing student learning.”

This article list many ways that the teacher can use instructional media to “create opportunities for all students to become active, empowered learners.” I picked out a few that I thought could be valuable as a teacher; collaborate, use technology to communicate with parents, and integrate the technology. It is important to realize that there are others that you can gain ideas from. You can share knowledge, ask questions, and discover technology together with other educators. As a teacher, it is important to be in consistent contact with the students’ parents/caregivers. Utilizing technology can make this simple and quick. Technology can also help with grade books, lesson plans, newsletters, etc. Finally, integrating technology into the classroom is crucial. There is a point where it can be too much. It is the job of the teacher to ensure that students are allowed to learn in many different ways and with many resources. Technology is one of these resources and when integrated well into the classroom, it can be a great teaching tool.

Suzy's Articles part 2

Dillion, Naomi. (Sept 2007). Educating Generation Z. American School Board Journal, Vol 194, p34-36.

This article was a really interesting one to read, I'd suggest to anyone to read it! It started off with a scenario from the year 2020. The classroom was dramatically different than it is now! Each student had a heart rate monitor on their wrists (and it sounded like it did more than just kept track of the student's heart rate) and a lap top. The teacher to student ratio had dramatically increased, 1:120, but that was because of a new program they had, Aileen Series 3000, which did all of the 'paper work' that a teacher would typically do. It also was able to tell you the best way for each student to learn, thus, you knew which students would excel at which assignments and could change them a little to benefit each student.

The article goes on to talk about how the generations are changing. My generation, for example, generation y, has known computers and the Internet pretty much their whole lives. I was about 8 when my family got our first computer, and ever since I truly started NEEDING the Internet, in about middle school, I can't remember life without the Internet either!

Lastly the article talks about, "The Future Looks Like This". I really enjoyed reading this article, and actually read most of it twice, to make sure that I didn't miss any good information! I can email you a copy of the article if you guys are interested in reading it, just let me know. It's a pretty short article.

Suzie's articles

I read a couple of articles for the assignment. Here are the refernces and summary of some:

Johnson, L (2004-2005). Using Technology to Enhance Intranational Studies. International Journal of Social Education, 19, Retrieved October 16, 2007, from http://www.bsu.edu/classes/cantu/journal.htm

- An elementary school teacher discusses how a lot of students are naive about the different cultures that exist in the United States. The author recommends using technology, such as Webquests, to have students learn more about the different cultures found in America (she uses the example of Native Americans).

Kingsley, K. (2007). 20 Ways to...Empower Diverse Learners With Educational Technology and Digital Media. Intervention in School and Clinic. 43, 52-56.
- 20 ways that teachers can use technology and other media either in lessons or in the classroom in general. Includes ideas such as using technology-supported assessment, using blogs to communicate with other teachers and/or parents, integrating technology, and other such ideas on how teachers can become more technology savvy.

Plans for Webquest

So because we are doing 4th grade, I was thinking we should probably do something with Utah history. That will be somewhat easy I think, which will be nice!

WebQuest Issues

Okay, first of all, I think a webquest should be organized using links instead of having one page. I want it to be easy to use and read.
